Chapter Sixteen: In Hiding
“What?” Hector asked her.
“I’m still a vampire. You know what that means?”
He thought for a second, and then he grinned. “Jeno can’t be dead.”
“That’s right.” Her smile widened. “Maybe none of them are. Maybe they’re in some kind of temporary state.”
“But if the sun hits them, will it…”
She frowned. “I hadn’t thought of that.” A lump rose to her throat. “I don’t know.”
“We can’t save all the vampires, but we can try to save Jeno.”
“How?”
“Come on.”
He took her hand and leapt from the swimming pool into the cool night. In the air, he turned her around, so that they were flying flat on their backs.
“This is different,” she said.
“This way, you can’t look at anything directly,” he explained. “It only takes a second for her to lock eyes with you.”
“What if she jumps in the air and flies above us?”
“She hasn’t been flying,” he said. “She seems to be tied to the land. I don’t know why. That’s why I wanted you to bite me.”
“So she avoids the sky and water,” Gertie said. “Maybe she’s avoiding Zeus and Poseidon.”
Hector kissed the side of her face. “You’re so smart.”
Gertie studied Hector for a moment, drinking him in—figuratively this time. She hadn’t allowed herself to remember how very attracted she was to him, but, just now, she couldn’t help herself.
Hector chuckled.
She’d forgotten that he could read her mind. So much for him thinking it was wrong and invasive.
Touché, he thought.
He held Apollo’s lyre above their faces and pointed it so that the golden base reflected the landscape below them. They maneuvered from the backyard to the front lawn and found their friends right where they had left them.
Hector’s thoughts revealed that he wanted to move all three of them to his basement, where they would be well-hidden and safe from the sun. But the problem was flying with all three of them and using the lyre.
“Are you sure your basement’s safe?” she asked him.
“I hope so. Can you think of a safer place?”
There was no way they could carry all three of them to New York. Plus, the sun would be rising soon, and if they got caught in it…she shuddered. Even taking them to a neighboring area, like Patras, would be risky. What if a stranger found them? She shook her head. “I guess not.”
“We’ll have to take them one at a time,” Hector said. “You hold the lyre and navigate, while I carry them. I’ll start with Nikita.”
As they flew across the neighborhood toward Hector’s house, Gertie wished with all her heart that Nikita was normal again, even if it meant listening to her screams and being strangled by her. Gertie did her best to use the reflection in the lyre to guide them safely, but it was awkward, and she wished she and Hector could switch jobs.
“You hold the lyre,” she said. “I’m not used to this, and you’ve been doing it all night.”
“True.”
Hector took Apollo’s lyre with one hand and handed over the bulky statue
